History of Graffiti Part 2
by Metal Man Ed

America's 200th birthday on July 4th 1976 also was a historic day in graffiti history.
This was the first time in history an entire 10 car train was painted from one end to the other. The train was the vision of CAINE1 and along with the help of DIME139, ROGER, CHINO174, TAGE, FLAME1 and a few others it became a reality.
The sad part of this feat is that the MTA was so upset when they saw that an entire train was painted, they immediately broke the train apart so it never ran as a complete train which unfortunately made it impossible for pictures to be taken of the entire train running. The separate cars however continued to run for years but with very few people knowing they were part of what was dubbed "The Freedom Train", named after the train CAINE1 painted.

The following year LEE and his crew THE FABULOUS FIVE would become the second line up to paint an entire 10 car train but unlike CAINE'S train, LEE'S would run in service.

The end of the 70's would bring an onslaught of writers producing beautiful whole cars in addition to thousands of "panel pieces" and throw ups. It brought us legendary names like SEEN, DONDI, ZEPHYR, SACH, CRASH, MITCH77, BAN2, KEL1st, SKEME, DEZ, MIN and the list goes on. In addition to these new names you had old timers that were still killing the lines like IZ THE WIZ, FUZZ ONE, CASE2 , LEE, QUIK, BLADE and COMET...

In 1981 Tony Silver along with Henry Chalfant started filming a documentary film about DJing, Emceeing, Break Dancing but the film primarily focused on graffiti. It featured the writers: SEEN, CAP, DONDI, IZ THE WIZ, SACH, MIN, QUIK, SKEME, DEZ, TRAP, KASE2, BUTCH2, MARE139, DUSTER, ZEPHYR, REVOLT and SHY147.

Shortly after the film released in 1983 people in other parts of the country started to take notice and started writing. By the time the book SUBWAY ART by Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper came out in 1984, graffiti was worldwide...

...By the end of the 80's graffiti was evolving and flourishing in every country in the world and new styles were developing everywhere.
Sadly 1989 brought the end to graffiti on the subways in New York with the MTA declaring any train that had graffiti on it would be pulled out of service and cleaned before it would run.
At this point a lot of writers stopped as they saw the end of the trains the end of graffiti but a handful of writers still waged war against the subway system in what was known at the "Clean Train Movement".

The writers that continued to paint trains during this time period were IZ THE WIZ, SAR, SACH, FUZZ, GHOST, KET, WANE, SENT, VEEFER, MIN1, VEN and a host of others. They tried to keep their paintings alive on the trains but the MTA was successful this time and subway graffiti slowly died out by the early 90's.

This was a blessing in disguise as writers now moved into the streets and rocked the highways and graffiti was again everywhere. Not just in New York but across the country and across the world, you couldn't go anywhere without seeing graffiti in one form or another.

The 90's however brought with it more and more anti-graffiti campaigns including vandal squads to try and curb graffiti. This along with stiffer penalties led to some pretty hefty jail time for a few writers. In 1994 the graffiti writer DESA from New York was caught and handed down a 1 year jail term for being coined "The Million Dollar Vandal" by the New York Daily News. And in 1997, GKAE from Los Angeles was handed down the longest sentence for graffiti to date, 3 years in prison.

The irony of this sentence is that the same day, in the same court, a convicted rapist was sentenced to less prison time. Needless to say they were trying to set an example that they were serious about wiping out graffiti.

The 90's brought an onslaught of graffiti all over European trains. In addition to the thousands of writers from Europe that were hitting their trains, writers from the US started to go over there to paint the trains because unlike here in the US, the trains ran with graffiti on them.

For new writers it gave them the feeling of the old school NY trains and for the old school writers they were able to continue their addiction of painting trains.
While the European trains were getting killed, here in the US, writers still wanting to paint trains gravitated toward the huge freight train system in the US.

Writers realized that by painting the freight trains they could get their names all over the country with the trains hardly ever getting buffed. It gave them tens of thousands of rolling canvases to paint on.
Writers like FRAME from Los Angeles could be in a freight yard to paint a train and see works from writers like SUCH and KA from Arizona. Just like DREAM and VOGUE in Oakland could catch freights painted by SMITH and CYCLE in New York. It gave writers across the country the same outlet as the subway trains did to writers in New York.

Throughout the late 90's and early 2000's graffiti was a part of everyday life and corporations realized this and despite it's general dislike they started using graffiti in their products as well as their advertising in hopes to reach their target customers. Just about everything you can imagine has used graffiti in it's advertising in one way or another. Every time you drive down the street and see a poster for a Disney movie when pasted on the wall, you are looking at a form of graffiti.

Some choose to call it vandalism but for those who have an open mind and can look past that see a beautiful art form. No matter how you view graffiti one simple fact remains, it is the only art form in history ever to be started by youths and no one can ever take that away from us!!!
The End
